Images

This is a wyke student working at a computer which shows hard work at wyke.

This shot shows both the 'ASH' sign and the student.

This wyke student looks happy and cheerful which is what I would maybe like to use for my main image because it gives a positive perception of wyke.

The 'Wilson Building' looks new in this photo and that also is positive and means it is a modern learning environment which is one of the reasons I chose wyke.

I am using this student on the front cover and his story is that he won an award for volunteering.

I am going to crop the person out of this image and have her walking into wyke (the image below).

This is the image I would like to use with the coverline about the student creating a new earphone for apple.

Analysis of Contents Pages

A contents page in a magazine is a page that informs you which story is on which page.

This is a very professional looking contents page and it includes everything a contents page should.

The language on this contents page is quite laid back and not very formal however it isn’t informal either.

The images on this contents page are all similar but different, they all involve a skateboard.

The ideology of this contents page is to promote skate boarding.

The audience of this contents page will probably be teenage girls but mainly boys and people interested in skateboarding.

The representation of this content page is a skateboarding boy.

The language of this contents page is very bland.

Two images on this content page are quite fashion related by the looks of it. The images all look quite dull as the lighting doesn’t seem very bright.

The writing is difficult to read because it slightly blends with the background colour.

The ideology of this content page is to give you an insight as to what is in the magazine.

The audience for this would be college students.

The representation is the images.

The images in this content page look like they have professionally been produced as they are well lit and are to a very good quality.

The audience for this contents page is students, both boys and girls but I think mainly girls because there are no boys in the images.

The representation is happy, cheerful looking girls.

Pricing and Publishing

Pricing and Publishing

I would sell my college magazine at the cost of £1 unless an NUS card is being used and in that case it would become 50p. The reason the magazine is so cheap is because it is for students and they may not have a lot of money as a lot of students spend their time studying and do not have a job or only a part time job and they won’t want to spend a lot of their money on a college magazine.
The magazine would be published monthly because more news can be gathered throughout a month then throughout a week and the magazine will seem more special if it was only published once every month which means it may become more appealing and I think more people would buy it monthly.

My Target Audience

Target Audience

The demographic gender of the target audience for my college magazine is both male and female. The demographic age of the target audience for my college magazine is age 16-19. The reason I have chosen this demographic gender and age is because it applies to college students.
My target audiences demographic s.e.g is E which is casual labourers and unemployed, the reason that 16-19 year olds fall into this category is because students normally are unemployed or work part time.
The VALS (value life styles) that apply to my target audience are the groups who are outer-directed; the reason for this is because they are at college achieving qualifications.
All five of the hierarchy of needs apply to my target audience because all college students have physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self actualisation needs.

Why I Chose Wyke

A LIIAR Analysis of the Brief

A Liiar analysis of the Brief

My front cover needs to contain a masthead. I will place this at the top of the page and it will cover the left side of the top of the page in big, bold writing. This will then stand out and therefore be noticeable for my target audience.
The main image will cover the whole of the front page and it has to be a medium close up of a subject that is making eye contact with the audience and the face has to be clearly seen. There will be a main image/ feature advertised will relate to my magazines main image.
My college magazine is going to be brightly coloured but it will look neat with two or three main colours, so the colours will link and look good together. The bright colours when matching will instantly look good and because they are bright they will become eye catching.
I will also include thumb nail images that illustrate other articles and I will include subtitles or teasers to make it clear why I have included the images.
Another convention I will include is an anchorage (main image cover line) to go with my main image and in a way explain what is happening in the image.
I will include a barcode and price on my front cover to let people know the cost of my college magazine; I will place the barcode in the bottom left corner and the price next to it.
A competition and free gifts, this will attract students to the magazine because they could win.
Teasing contents along the bottom will be included because this is another way of grabbing the student’s attention, the teasing contents will make them want to read on which therefore means they have to buy the college magazine.

I am going to pretend that I am producing my magazine for an existing publisher, whose other publications have something in common with mine.

The message I would like to convey in my magazine is that wyke is a fun place to be at but it has very high standards and it is a brilliant educational environment. The aim is to help students to be enthusiastic about coming to wyke every week day.

My target audience is wyke students aged 16-19. The reason I choose this target audience is because I can relate to this audience which will make my magazine better.

I would like to positively represent the college and make it look better, I would like it to look like a happy learning environment.

The Analysis of a College Magazine front Cover

For the analysis of this ‘College’ magazine front page I am going to include the techniques used and talk about the reasons they are appropriate for this magazine.

The first thing I noticed on this front cover was the masthead.  This is because it’s bold and stands out.  Another reason why the masthead is the first thing you notice is because it covers the top of the page in red writing.  This is good because you immediately know the name of the magazine.
The image stands out because the black ground has been slightly blurred so the teenage girl stands out more in the medium long shot.  The girl used on the front cover looks like the type of person who this magazines target audience would be.
The main cover-line (also known as anchorage) is linked to the image because in the cover-line it says ‘on SMU’s Campus’ and in the image the girl is wearing an ‘I (HEART) SMU’ t-shirt. The good thing about that is you instantly know who the main cover-line is mentioning.
The barcode is in the bottom right corner because it is then out of the way.
The date is in small font underneath the masthead this is so people know when the magazine was issued.
I think the best teaser on this front cover is ‘She’s 15 & pregnant’. The reason I think it is the best is because it immediately draws you in and catches your eyes.
The main feature: headline is ‘A new kind of balancing act Nastia Liukin on SMU’s campus’. The reason I would class this as the main feature is because it is the first feature I look at on the front page as it is placed in the top left corner.
There are 5 subtitles/sell lines and 4 smaller features on this front cover. This is actually a lot less than normal front covers of magazines.
The font for this magazine is all the same but in different sizes and colours, the font used is simple so that it is easy and clear to read. The colours used go well together so it looks neat and professional.
The colours used for the masthead is red which makes it automatically stand out because red is a bright colour. The colours used for the other font is blue and black which aren’t very bright however they still stand out because they are bold. The colours used in the image on the front page are bright which makes the image look summery; another factor to the magazine looking summery is that the girl is wearing a pair of shorts. This is good because everything on the front page works well together.
There are no offers on this front page because it is a college magazine.
The dateline is in small font underneath the masthead, this is just to show the date this magazine was issued.
The vocabulary/language used on this front page is the kind of vocabulary what you would expect for a college magazine and I think it works for the target audience.
The ideology for this front page is to promote education. The aim is to grab people’s attention so they pick up and read the magazine.
The target audience for this magazine will be college students.
The representation of this magazine front cover is the girl on the front.
The splash is good because layout is correct the colour scheme looks neat and the image is a good shot.
I am now going to analyse and compare the first magazine front cover to this one.

The first thing I notice on this magazine front cover is the image, the reason for this is because it covers the whole front page and even though there is writing on top of it, the image overlaps the masthead. This image is a lot different to the first one because it is an image of a man and the background is a lot different because instead of having the outdoors (trees and grass) it is a plain, dark background.
This makes me think that this magazine would be more popular with its target audience (college students) because it is more appealing and trendy.
This magazine has a skyline which says “Your exclusive guide to everything hip, hot & happening” this is a lot different to the first magazine I analysed because the first one didn’t have a skyline. A technique used here is alliteration.
The font on this front cover is a lot brighter and stands out more.
The language used is very positive and a lot of it could be classed as cool. Examples of positive language are ‘Bright Future’, ‘Make Money’, ‘Thank God It’s Friday’, ‘Love’ and ‘Jump up & Wave’. All these words automatically make you think that the story included with these words is going to be cheerful which automatically attracts people. An example of a cool word is ‘Couture’ this makes me think of trendy fashion or just trendiness in general.
The ideology of this magazine front cover is to try and educate students and possibly to persuade them into doing other subjects, evidence to support this idea in the image is the books that the man in the image is carrying. He is carrying the books and he looks like a popular young man, so if students see him holding those books they may want to take those subjects.
The institution of this magazine is the college.
The audience for this magazine is college students but I think that it will appeal more to girls because the man on the front is attractive and the reason it will appeal to boys as well because boys may look at it and in a way aspire to be like the man because he is probably popular with the girls.
The representation of the magazine is the man in a leather jacket with a white top and a necklace looking stylish and attractive whilst carrying books and looking intellectual. This is a good representation because it will draw people’s attention and therefore sell the product.
Out of the two magazines the one I think is more professional and to a better standard and the one that looks more interesting is the second one. The reasons for this is because it is more aesthetically pleasing, with the amount of text, the layout and the image.

This magazine front cover uses questions in each cover line and underneath in smaller font the questions are answered. One of the answers is trying to persuade the readers to get the magazine. The language used is quite informal.

This magazine has a skyline but in the skyline is the slogan for the magazine.

The image is of a teenage boy stood in front of his college building but there is no anchorage to go with the image.

The ideology of this magazine is to try and help students who have money problems and would like more to do.

The audience of this magazine would be college students who are boys or girls and want help.

The representation of college is positive because the main image is a boy who looks extremely happy.
